REVIEW: Hushed by Kelley York(shush!!!)

Hushed by
Kelley York
Published by Entangled Publishing
Date Published: December 6th 2011
Rating: 4.5/5

Synopsis: He’s saved her. He’s loved her. He’s killed for her.
Eighteen-year-old Archer couldn’t protect his best friend, Vivian, from what happened when they were kids, so he’s never stopped trying to protect her from everything else. It doesn’t matter that Vivian only uses him when hopping from one toxic relationship to another—Archer is always there, waiting to be noticed.
Then along comes Evan, the only person who’s ever cared about Archer without a single string attached. The harder he falls for Evan, the more Archer sees Vivian for the manipulative hot-mess she really is.
But Viv has her hooks in deep, and when she finds out about the murders Archer’s committed and his relationship with Evan, she threatens to turn him in if she doesn’t get what she wants… And what she wants is Evan’s death, and for Archer to forfeit his last chance at redemption.

My thoughts

Cover: A simply dark cover in my opinion. Because of it simplicity it catches your attention. Not girl –ified. No bare chest model. Like those  but their overdone. It catches your attention becuase of the the blood smears on his cheek. I ask myself what happened when I see that.

Book: When I saw it on Goodreads in August and read the synopsis I immediately added it to my wishlist and it is still there. I received the e-ARC. When I got a chance to review it after being declined a multiple number of times on Net Galley, I did not let this opportunity pass me by.

The book begins where Archer, our leading male, forces a victim to commit suicide. I started this and I thought it was like a teenage Dexter. I love that show but can’t feel compassion for Dex. In archer’s case I could. He is a soul but throughout the book I felt compassion and began to care for this character. Ok he is a serial killer, which is not good. In his mind killing the teenagers that hurt Vivian, his best friend, will undo the hurt that they put her through.

I felt compassion for Viv. I felt sorry for the crappy relationships and the poor picking of boyfriends. She is always choosing jerks and lowlifes that hurt her in the end emotionally and as a result she cries and finds support in Archer, her best friend.

But everything changes when Evan comes in to their lives. Archer first meets Evan on the college campus when he asks for directions to the administration building. He does not know what’s so alluring about him, but he makes him feel calm. They spend more and more time together and Archer starts to feel for Evan and Evan for Archer. Archer does not want to kill anymore.

But little Miss Vivian (she is not little lol, a college kid)starts to notice things and sees her Viv/Archer time dwindling. The person both Archer and myself [to me characters are real in alternative universe] thought she was, turns out to be an illusion. My compassion plummeted to ground zero.

In my opinion the baddest, most manipulative protagonist of the year belongs to her. She is the driving force of the novel.
This is one of darkest, emotional YA releases of the year. This book is a huge thriller especially near the end. Any one not comfortable with older dark YA or new adult, male-male love and some graphic scenes it may not be for you. Can’t wait what Kelly thinks up next.

Songs that fit perfectly with this book and they do generate a atmosphere

reminds me of Archer and how he feels bouth himself

REVIEW: Eve by Anna Carey, it's a Woman's world?!

Eve(Eve #1) byAnna Carey
Published by Harper Teen
Date Published : October 4th 2011
Rating : 4/5

Synopsis:The year is 2032, sixteen years after a deadly virus—and the vaccine intended to protect against it—wiped out most of the earth’s population. The night before eighteen-year-old Eve’s graduation from her all-girls school she discovers what really happens to new graduates, and the horrifying fate that awaits her.
Fleeing the only home she’s ever known, Eve sets off on a long, treacherous journey, searching for a place she can survive. Along the way she encounters Caleb, a rough, rebellious boy living in the wild. Separated from men her whole life, Eve has been taught to fear them, but Caleb slowly wins her trust...and her heart. He promises to protect her, but when soldiers begin hunting them, Eve must choose between true love and her life.

My thoughts

Cover: Eve has a great cover .The golden gate bridge looks very warn out. The cover depicts a scene from Eve. I like it when publishers do that. My only complaint is that her arms look like doll arms.

Book: I won this paperback ARC at a giveaway in July/early august .Received it after 2 months and began reading immediately.

It’s 2015. A mother is writing a letter and end’s it with the words I love you, I love you, I love you. This prologue is one of my favorites. It is 2032. 16 years later. Eve is in 12th year on the School and graduating soon. The evening of the graduation she discovers a sinister secret and everything she has known and has been told is a lie! Someone finds out she knows the secret and orders her to flee.

Eve our leading lady, has good traits but she is so NAÏVE, reminds me of Ariel. But she losses her naivety trough out the book. She is persistent, does not give up and becomes brave. What I also admire that the was thought has a some truth to it , some men treat girls/woman without respect and are lusting over them and there are other specimen of the male side of humanity who are totally different ; caring ,kind ,sweet, trustworthy and helpful. And that she starts to know the difference.

Caleb our leading male and love interest has dreadlocks and he reminds me of teenage muscular Disney Tarzan lookalike without the vines. He is one of the vey YA boys who love reading and books. The 1st I’ve encountered the other than Sam [the wolves of mercy falls trilogy]. Joyous reads and I made a joke about it on twitter. You get to see in the little ways he feels for eve and falls for her.

Their romance/love is not a insta-love in my opinion. I have read some reviews, they disagree with me. I respect their opinion but this mine. I found the perfect song for Caleb and Eve and fits with a specific scene on the author’s blog. Throughout the book I’ve rooted for them.

The world building is decent but a bit lacking. However I love she has a way with words. The lack of kept it from a 5 star rating but loved the characters. Why why such a bittersweet ending Eagerly awaiting book two, titled Once. Hope I win a copy[ARC or finished copy] or gifted one.~~~fingers crossed~~`wink, wink~~

Songs that fit perfectly with this book and they do generate a atmosphere[ the lines describing scenes are written by Anna Carey on her blog]

Sleep by Azure Ray
I imagine this as the soundtrack to that night before graduation, when Eve’s terrified and confused, trying to figure out what to do next

Across the Universe (cover by Fiona Apple)
Beautiful cover. Reminds me a lot of the confusion and excitement Eve first feels that morning outside the wall.

Orange Sky by Alexi Murdoch
In the dugout Eve gets closer to Caleb, and learns about the Trail and the labor camps. This song reminds me a lot of what she’s feeling and thinking then

Heartbeats by Jose Gonzalez
Song about how confusing love can be

Howl by Florence and the Machine
I’ve always thought of this song as the unofficial theme song for Eve. I love the lines “Be careful of the curse that falls on young lovers/ Starts so soft and sweet and turns them to hunters”. Reminds me of all those lessons at School.

Cosmic Love by Florence and the Machine
Love the line “I’m always in this twilight”. Feels true to the bittersweet end of the book

Airel (The Airel Saga #1) by Aaron Patterson

Then there's Michael Alexander, the new guy in school, who is impossibly gorgeous;and captivated by her. Somewhere in the back of her mind, she can hear the sound of pages turning, and another, older story being written. It is the story of an ancient family, of great warriors, of the Sword of Light, and the struggle against an evil so terrible, so far-reaching, that it threatens everything. Airel knew change would be an inevitable part of life. But can she hold on when murder and darkness begin to close in and take away everything she loves? Will she have what it takes when the truth is finally revealed?

New Girl by Paige Harbison

Publication  Date: January 31st 2012 by HarlequinTeen

They call me 'New Girl'...
Ever since I arrived at exclusive, prestigious Manderly Academy, that’s who I am. New girl. Unknown. But not unnoticed—because of her.
Becca Normandy—that’s the name on everyone’s lips. The girl whose picture I see everywhere. The girl I can’t compare to. I mean, her going missing is the only reason a spot opened up for me at the academy. And everyone stares at me like it’s my fault.
Except for Max Holloway—the boy whose name shouldn’t be spoken. At least, not by me. Everyone thinks of him as Becca’s boyfriend…but she’s gone, and here I am, replacing her. I wish it were that easy. Sometimes, when I think of Max, I can imagine how Becca’s life was so much better than mine could ever be.
And maybe she’s still out there, waiting to take it back

"A film that kills people? Yep, we were right there for it. And how West and Gray weave such a great suspense tale amongst all the carnage is truly brilliant. And of course, we appreciated the sexual tension between the F.B.I. agent and his ex-fiance. I have no idea how you could create a sequel, but we want one!"

Crusade in Jeans by Thea Beckman, a childhood favorite

Crusade in Jeans by
Thea Beckman
Published by Lemniscaat
Date Published: November 1st 2011 [first published in 1973]
Rating: 4/5

Synopsis: Fifteen-year-old Dolf uses a prototype time machine and gets stuck in the Middle Ages. Trying to find his way back to the twentieth century, he joins a children's crusade of almost ten thousand children on their way to the Holy Land. Dolf helps the children defy the terrible mountains, conquer disease and fight evil knights. Slowly, Dolf begins to realize that the real danger does not lurk behind the next mountaintop, but rather within the crusade itself.

Crusade in Jeans was first published in 1973. It became an overnight success, making Thea Beckman one of the most popular authors of juvenile books in Europe. In 1974, Crusade in Jeans was awarded The Golden Pen (the most prestigious Dutch national award for children's books). In 1976, the Province of Trento, Italy, named it the Best European Historical Juvenile Book. In 2006, the book was turned in an award-winning movie picture featuring Emma Watson, Michael Culkin, Joe Flynn and Stephanie Leonidas. Awards included top honors at Toronto Sprockets (2008) and the Children’s Jury Award at the Chicago International Film Festival (2007).
the original Dutch Cover

My thoughts

Cover: like the newly American better than the old nostalgic original version... [Correction the publication of 2003 by a imprint of is  lemniscaat s a favorite as well]

Book: This was one of the very first books I read when I was younger. Can you believe it’s almost 40 year old and published again this year in America. When I saw it on netgalley I had to request it , I had a rush of nostalgia.I Loved it in the past. My native tongue is Dutch by the way. Iwondered if I felt the same after 10 years later and in English. It’s a pretty decent translation and my growing up resulted in a 4 star rating.
2003 us cover

Rudolf Hefting, Dolf for short, our leading male from Holland. Who is smart, brave, courageous teenager and stand’s his ground which gets him in trouble in the 12th century.

When you begin to read the this novel, we find Dolf in the laboratory of the family friends , two loony ish professors after asking and persisting his parents to see the newly developed time machine. He persisted again while he was time with the Profs that he could be more useful than chimps, which they used for experiments.

Dolf is now in the 12 century france or so he thinks , but rather in germany. And meets a crusade formed completely by children ranging from the age of 4 to 14, 15, 16 to free Jerusalem from the Arabs.

He misses his ‘’ride back’’ to the present and is stuck in the 12th century. I would have panicked but he is calm and collected. And he takes part of the crusade.
Some secrets are being hidden , lies are being told in the whole [massa massa, local tongue, sranang tongo] congregation of the child crusade.

Liked Dolf interaction with the 12th era folk, everything is different for this 20th century teen. He is very skeptic of this religious area, Europe of that time period. This has no doubt Christian/religious influences but it’s not preachy. So not religious folk can enjoy it!! I hope

There’s no minor lead or secondary character I did not like.

A Couple of characters i really liked
Maria a 11 year old taking part in the crusade is from the beginning with Dolf and befriends him and sees her like a little sister.

Leonardo Fibonacci, 15, 16 or 17 I think is very first friend Dolf befriends

THERE IS ABSOLUTELY NO ROMANCE IN THIS BOOK. SO BOYS BE NOT AFRAID TO READ A 300 PLUS PAGE NOVEL.lol

After the big reveal, the secrets have come to light. It dragged on a bit let say 40 ish pages but that’s a short amount of page space and quickly begins to exite again when Dolf finds a way to go home, to the present. Will say this it was emotional for Dolf to leave his friends behind after let say 3 to 4 months with them. Roro signing out.

My toughs:

Cover: A other great cover. It's a m/m[male/male] thriller/mystery.LOVe  the blue color scheme and lighting.

Book: Was so exited reading. Liked it from the beginning where the male protagonist interviews a granny. A few chapters later got a bit confused. I'll tell ya'll why? So many pov's were introduced and characters who did not return later in the book. At first 1 pov then 2  till 4 , 5 or more!! I quit in the middle of this book. I really liked the leading male but way to little ''screen time'.

UK cover

 my thoughts

Cover: Requested it right after I saw it on netgalley. Looked it up on Goodreads and saw a Uk cover I think. First loved that version but the Us started to grow on me and its now the better of the two [us cover]

Book: This is about Will, above 700 year old vampire but he looks like a 16 year old teenager. He hates the word vampire prefers the term Living Dead. He sleeps decades at a at a time reminds. He finds it to be a disease. And hate the being who did this to him.

I could have finished it, had 100 pages left but forgot about it while reading a other book and it expired. I often read two books at a time. Downloaded it again, started but could not get past page 50. Don’t know why.

It’s not that will is not likeable, gentle men like at times and not shimmering [I know a hint to twilight again] But did not feel attached to him or the girl he meets when he awakes in the 21 century after having 30 ish or more years of rest.

I did like the atmosphere and anecdotes of him in the past centuries. The front used made it very journal like. In a couple of centuries he liked a girl but a happy ending in all of them. Don’t know if the 21th century girl falls in love with him, did not finished it. There were signs of maybe a romance.

The enemy was a ENEMY. Those scenes were intense and you felt the atmosphere in the book. This is book 1 of the Trilogy and don't really know if i'll read book 2.A couple of people liked it on goodreads
.

The Shadow Reader (McKenzie Lewis #1) by

Sandy Williams

Publication date:October 25th 2011 , Ace

Genre: Adult Urban Fantasy

There can only be one allegiance. It’s her time to choose.
Some humans can see the fae. McKenzie Lewis can track them, reading the shadows they leave behind. But some shadows lead to danger. Others lead to lies.
A Houston college student trying to finish her degree, McKenzie has been working for the fae king for years, tracking vicious rebels who would claim the Realm. Her job isn’t her only secret. For just as long, she’s been in love with Kyol, the king’s sword-master—and relationships between humans and fae are forbidden.
But any hope for a normal life is shattered when she’s captured by Aren, the fierce and uncompromising rebel leader. He teaches her the forbidden fae language and tells her dark truths about the Court, all to persuade her to turn against the king. Time is running out, and as the fight starts to claim human lives, McKenzie has no choice but to decide once and for all whom to trust and where she ultimately stands in the face of a cataclysmic civil war.
Heard great things about it, great heroine , who's a bit clumsy at first, I've heard. So love the cover, the sword bearing girl. WOWSA

Caleb's Wars  by

David L. Dudley

Publication date: October 24th 2011, Clarion Books

Genre: Historical Young Adult

A "colored" area in rural Georgia during World War II is the setting for the story of 15-year-old Caleb, whose brother, Randall, is in the army, waiting to be shipped overseas. This brings the war home to Caleb, as does the arrival of German POWs in the community. Torn between his loyalty to Randall and his discovery that a German can hate the Nazis as much as he does, Caleb is also fighting his own personal wars, against whites, against his domineering, angry father, and even--in a way--against God. Newly baptized to please his devout mother, Caleb has heard a voice he comes to believe is God's because he can't account for it any other way, and to his own astonishment he is able, twice, to heal afflicted people through prayer. In an era before the civil rights movement as we know it was born, Caleb lives with segregation, bullying, humiliation, and helplessness. Difficult as it is to put on humility and stay out of trouble, it's even harder to imagine that he is, somehow, special. A compelling coming-of-age story,Caleb's Warsportrays a young man who discovers his true calling, the kind of awareness that ultimately made the civil rights movement possible.
Set in WW2, sounds pretty emontional and it's a colored main character. Needs to be more of that.

The Night Circus by

Publication Date: September 13th 2011 by Doubleday

Synopsis: The circus arrives without warning. No announcements precede it. It is simply there, when yesterday it was not. Within the black-and-white striped canvas tents is an utterly unique experience full of breathtaking amazements. It is called Le Cirque des Rêves, and it is only open at night.

But behind the scenes, a fierce competition is underway—a duel between two young magicians, Celia and Marco, who have been trained since childhood expressly for this purpose by their mercurial instructors. Unbeknownst to them, this is a game in which only one can be left standing, and the circus is but the stage for a remarkable battle of imagination and will. Despite themselves, however, Celia and Marco tumble headfirst into love—a deep, magical love that makes the lights flicker and the room grow warm whenever they so much as brush hands.

True love or not, the game must play out, and the fates of everyone involved, from the cast of extraordinary circus performers to the patrons, hang in the balance, suspended as precariously as the daring acrobats overhead.

Written in rich, seductive prose, this spell-casting novel is a feast for the senses and the heart.[was given by evie At thebookfiend, tnx evie]
