Review: The Flash, Vol. 1: Move Forward by Francis Manapul

The Flash, Vol. 1: Move Forward (The Flash (New 52) #1)
 by Francis Manapul, Brian Buccellato
Published by DC Comics
Date Production : November 13th 2012
Source:edelweiss
Rating: 3.8/5

Synopsis:Struck by a bolt of lightning and doused in chemicals, Central City Police scientist Barry Allen was transformed into the fastest man alive. Tapping into the energy field called The Speed Force, he applies a tenacious sense of justice to protect an serve the world as The Flash! The Fastest Man Alive returns to his own monthly series as part of the DC Comics—The New 52 event with the writer/artist team of Francis Manapul and Brian Buccellato. The Flash knows he can't be everywhere at once, but he has seemingly met his match when he faces DC Comic' hottest new Super Villain, Mob Rule, who really can be everywhere at once!
As Mob Rule wages a campaign of crime across Central City, including an electromagnetic blast that plunges the city into darkness, The Flash learns the the only way he can capture Mob Rule and save Central City is to learn how to make his brain function even faster than before—but as much as it helps him, it also comes with a steep price.
This volume collects issues 1-6 of the monthly series.

My thoughts:

Cover: I love the red and the font

Book:The Flash, the fastest man in the World( having flashbacks of 90’s superman episodes where Flash and Superman try to outrun each other)

This volume is part of the DC Comics redesign. Wally West has been the Flash for more than 2 decades after Barry Allen sacrificed himself. But Barry Allen has risen from the dead and Wally West never existed. A lot of people were mad 12 months ago when it was revealed . I’m not mad but a bit pissed . I grew up with Wally. I have read Barry’s “’beginning’” and it ok . I have not connected with Barry . Sad I know but I still enjoyed it. Here is why?

The PLOT is freaking good. There is time travel, vortexes, cloning, and the ability to regenerate. The plot had me hooked. SCI galore

Info on BarryAllen: When Barry Allen was only eleven, his mother was murdered. His father was tried and convicted for the murder, and later died in prison. However, the young Allen refused to believe that his father was guilty of the crime. His life ground to a halt as he dedicated himself to finding the real murderer and, more importantly, finding the motive behind the murder. To this end, Allen studied forensic science, and dedicated himself to solving not only his mother's case, but those of other people in his situation.

After graduating, Allen found work with the Central City Police Department as a police scientist, with a well-known habit for slowness and lateness. Working late in the lab one night, a rack of chemicals that he was working next to was struck by lightning, and Allen was doused in chemicals. Surprisingly unharmed, Allen cleaned up the mess and returned to work, but soon noticed that the world appeared to be moving much slower than normal. He soon realized that it was not the world that had slowed, but himself who had sped up. And he was the 2nd Flash

A summary without spoiling ( There are 8 chapters and 2 interlocking storylines . 4for each) :
Barry has not yet learned to control his powers. He stops a thief during a theft and they plummet down from the roof of a lab. The impacts kill the thief. When Barry arrives at the scene he sees that the dead man is his childhood friend.

The art style was really good but lacked the beauty of Aquaman. I do have to admit captain cold is drawn amazingly ( hot) lol

Still exited for future releases

WOW #11

Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly Meme hosted by Jill @ Breaking the Spine. Book bloggers present upcoming books they can’t wait to read and share their enthusiasm about new releases

Iron Hearted Violet (GOODREADS)
by Kelly Barnhil
Published by  Little, Brown Books for Young Readers
Date to be published: October 2012

Synopis:The end of their world begins with a story. This one.

In most fairy tales, princesses are beautiful, dragons are terrifying, and stories are harmless. This isn't most fairy tales.

Princess Violet is plain, reckless, and quite possibly too clever for her own good. Particularly when it comes to telling stories. One day she and her best friend, Demetrius, stumble upon a hidden room and find a peculiar book. A forbidden book. It tells a story of an evil being -- called the Nybbas -- imprisoned in their world. The story cannot be true -- not really. But then the whispers start. Violet and Demetrius, along with an ancient, scarred dragon, may hold the key to the Nybbas's triumph . . . or its demise. It all depends on how they tell the story. After all, stories make their own rules.

Iron Hearted Violet is a story of a princess unlike any other. It is a story of the last dragon in existence, deathly afraid of its own reflection. Above all, it is a story about the power of stories, our belief in them, and how one enchanted tale changed the course of an entire kingdom

She freaking rides on a dragon. that is badass .And so young. I love middle grade covers

Her song lands her back in England — and in mortal peril, for the kingdom lies in the cruel grasp of a powerful Lord Protector and his mind-reading hunters, the Shadowgrims. The Protector has killed all Chantresses, for they alone can destroy the Shadowgrims. Only Lucy has survived.

Only 4 months left

Four months left of  2012.  Time really does fly. 2012 has been a great year for books. We all read a lot of books. Here are some of my ultimate  favorite books this year so far.

Graceling by Kristin Cashore . ( this is well known but if you have not heard of it before, I have included the synopsis.

Synopsis: His eyes, Katsa had never seen such eyes. One was silver, and the other, gold. They glowed in his sun-darkened face, uneven, and strange. She was surprised that they hadn't shone in the darkness of their first meeting. They didn't seem human....
Then he raised his eyebrows a hair, and his mouth shifted into the hint of a smirk. He nodded at her, just barely, and it released her from her spell.
Cocky, she thought. Cocky and arrogant, this one, and that was all there was to make of him. Whatever game he was playing, if he expected her to join him he would be disappointed.

In a world where people born with an extreme skill - called a Grace - are feared and exploited, Katsa carries the burden of the skill even shedespises: the Grace of killing. She lives under the command of her uncle Randa, King of the Middluns, and is expected to execute his dirty work, punishing and torturing anyone who displeases him.
When she first meets Prince Po, who is Graces with combat skills, Katsa has no hint of how her life is about to change.
She never expects to become Po's friend.
She never expects to learn a new truth about her own Grace - or about a terrible secret that lies hidden far away...a secret that could destroy all seven kingdoms with words alone
I have not written a review yet. I have tried  but i can't put words on paper. ITS FREAKING AWESOME. I LOVE KATSA. hopefully i review it soon

Everneath by Brodi Ashton ( a 2012 debut and hyped book. I'm cautious towards hyped books because i\ve been let down a couple of times .( cough * the hunger games *) but this book deserves the hype)

When you were mine by Rebecca Serle ( not an hyped book but i wish it was.It is an  kind of romeo and juliet retelling but from rosaline's pov)

Synopsis:In this intensely romantic, modern recounting of the greatest love story ever told, Romeo’s original intended—Juliet’s cousin Rosaline—tells her side of the tale. What’s in a name, Shakespeare? I’ll tell you: Everything.
Rosaline knows that she and Rob are destined to be together. Rose has been waiting for years for Rob to kiss her—and when he finally does, it’s perfect. But then Juliet moves back to town. Juliet, who used to be Rose’s best friend. Juliet, who now inexplicably hates her. Juliet, who is gorgeous, vindictive, and a little bit crazy...and who has set her sights on Rob. He doesn’t even stand a chance.
Rose is devastated over losing Rob to Juliet. This is not how the story was supposed to go. And when rumors start swirling about Juliet’s instability, her neediness, and her threats of suicide, Rose starts to fear not only for Rob’s heart, but also for his life. Because Shakespeare may have gotten the story wrong, but we all still know how it ends….
Have not reviewed it yet. SOON SOON

Synopsis:A contemporary young-adult retelling inspired by the classic 1938 romantic suspense bestseller Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier.
They call me 'New Girl'...
Ever since I arrived at exclusive, prestigious Manderly Academy, that’s who I am. New girl. Unknown. But not unnoticed—because of her.
Becca Normandy—that’s the name on everyone’s lips. The girl whose picture I see everywhere. The girl I can’t compare to. I mean, her going missing is the only reason a spot opened up for me at the academy. And everyone stares at me like it’s my fault.
Except for Max Holloway—the boy whose name shouldn’t be spoken. At least, not by me. Everyone thinks of him as Becca’s boyfriend…but she’s gone, and here I am, replacing her. I wish it were that easy. Sometimes, when I think of Max, I can imagine how Becca’s life was so much better than mine could ever be.
And maybe she’s still out there, waiting to take it back

Yet back in Philadelphia during the school year, Alex cannot suppress his anger at his father (who killed himself), his mother (whom he blames for it), and the girls who give it up too easily. His younger brother, Kyle, is angry too—at his abusive brother, and at their mother who doesn’t seem to care. Meanwhile, in suburban New Jersey, Katie plays the role of Miss Perfect while trying to forget the nightmare that changed her life. But Julie, her younger sister, sees Katie only as everything she’s not. And their mother will never let Julie forget it.
Up at the lake, they can be anything, anyone. Free. But then Katie’s secret gets out, forcing each of them to face reality—before it tears them to pieces.

Article 5 (Article 5 #1) by Kristen Simmons ( an intense 2012 debut)

Synopsis: New York, Los Angeles, and Washington, D.C., have been abandoned.
The Bill of Rights has been revoked, and replaced with the Moral Statutes.
There are no more police—instead, there are soldiers. There are no more fines for bad behavior—instead, there are arrests, trials, and maybe worse. People who get arrested usually don't come back.
Seventeen-year-old Ember Miller is old enough to remember that things weren’t always this way. Living with her rebellious single mother, it’s hard for her to forget that people weren’t always arrested for reading the wrong books or staying out after dark. It’s hard to forget that life in the United States used to be different.
Ember has perfected the art of keeping a low profile. She knows how to get the things she needs, like food stamps and hand-me-down clothes, and how to pass the random home inspections by the military. Her life is as close to peaceful as circumstances allow.
That is, until her mother is arrested for noncompliance with Article 5 of the Moral Statutes. And one of the arresting officers is none other than Chase Jennings…the only boy Ember has ever loved.

Synopsis:The King of the Seven Seas Aquaman returns to his very own ongoing series for the first time in years at the hands of DC Entertainment Chief Creative Office Geoff Johns, who reteams with GREEN LANTERN collaborator artist Ivan Reis! Between proving himself to a world that sees him as a joke, Aquaman and his bride Mera face off against a long buried terror from the depths of the ocean

My thoughts

Cover: An epic cover. I love the Trident

Book: I always liked Aquaman growing up but never liked him as mutch as the popular ones. Until now . After reading this wonderfull comic book written by Geoff Johns, and illustrated by Ivan Reis and Joe Prado ( never heard of those people but they are pretty huge in the comic world).

The Aquaman jokes and Arthur being used as the laughingstock of the superheroes are present in this comic and I felt very sorry for Arthur Curry. I’m still getting bullied at school because I’m not mainstream and I read. I could connect with a fictional character .Heck that what books are for to connect even comic books .

This volume has 6 chapters or stories. Four for one plot and the last two bridges to the second volume.

A kind of summary but nothing spoilerific
Aquaman appears midtown Boston, interrupting a car chase and successfully stopping the crime in action, much to the surprise of present criminals and policemen alike.

Arthur later goes to have lunch at a seafood restaurant, in full costume. Apparently subscribing to the common misconception that

Aquaman speaks to fish, a number of people react with surprise when Aquaman orders 'fish and chips' from the menu. He clarifies that his ability is to control various forms of sea life rather than speaking to them in the conventional sense, as fish don't actually converse. A blogger approaches Aquaman with various questions, despite the latter's insistence that he's just trying to have some lunch. Aquaman leaves when the blogger's final question offends him, but tells the waitress to keep the change (having paid with gold coins).

At Amnesty Bay, Aquaman recalls his childhood with his father, when Mera appears. Aquaman tells her he has decided to have new life with her, free from the responsibilities of being the king of Atlantis.
From the depths of the Atlantic ocean, the 'Trench'( monsterlike aquatic creatures) emerge, confirming their suspicion that 'there is an above'. After dragging a fisherman into the water and eating him, one of creatures declares that there is food on the surface world.

Mira , his wife and royal of Atlantis is a bad ass. She is not help less like humans think she is and still has a gentle side of her. And she is a ginger . Va Va voom

I loved the art style. If it was not color inked I would not have the same experience. I already knew than Aqua man was cool but Geoff shows how awesome and kind hearted Arthur Curry aka Aquaman is . I am exited for volume two in the future.

An awesome review of a comic / anime /manga reviewer. courtesy of Deadpoolzilla

WOW #10

Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly Meme hosted by Jill @ Breaking the Spine. Book bloggers present upcoming books they can’t wait to read and share their enthusiasm about new releases

Carnival of Souls (GOODREADS)
by Melissa Marr
Published by HarperCollins
Date to be published:  September 4th 2012

Synopsis: In a city of daimons, rigid class lines separate the powerful from the power-hungry. And at the heart of The City is the Carnival of Souls, where both murder and pleasure are offered up for sale. Once in a generation, the carnival hosts a deadly competition that allows every daimon a chance to join the ruling elite. Without the competition, Aya and Kaleb would both face bleak futures--if for different reasons. For each of them, fighting to the death is the only way to try to live.
All Mallory knows of The City is that her father--and every other witch there--fled it for a life in exile in the human world. Instead of a typical teenage life full of friends and maybe even a little romance, Mallory scans quiet streets for threats, hides herself away, and trains to be lethal. She knows it's only a matter of time until a daimon finds her and her father, so she readies herself for the inevitable. While Mallory possesses little knowledge of The City, every inhabitant of The City knows of her. There are plans for Mallory, and soon she, too, will be drawn into the decadence and danger that is the Carnival of Souls.

I have read nothing from her. But extremely exited. REaD the synopsis . read it. It souds great right and i love fantasy . Plus the trailer was wicked.

The Raven Boys (Raven Cycle #1)
by Maggie Stiefvater
Published by Scholastic Press
Date to be published : September 18th

Synopsis:
“There are only two reasons a non-seer would see a spirit on St. Mark’s Eve,” Neeve said. “Either you’re his true love . . . or you killed him.”
It is freezing in the churchyard, even before the dead arrive.
Every year, Blue Sargent stands next to her clairvoyant mother as the soon-to-be dead walk past. Blue herself never sees them—not until this year, when a boy emerges from the dark and speaks directly to her.
His name is Gansey, and Blue soon discovers that he is a rich student at Aglionby, the local private school. Blue has a policy of staying away from Aglionby boys. Known as Raven Boys, they can only mean trouble.
But Blue is drawn to Gansey, in a way she can’t entirely explain. He has it all—family money, good looks, devoted friends—but he’s looking for much more than that. He is on a quest that has encompassed three other Raven Boys: Adam, the scholarship student who resents all the privilege around him; Ronan, the fierce soul who ranges from anger to despair; and Noah, the taciturn watcher of the four, who notices many things but says very little.
For as long as she can remember, Blue has been warned that she will cause her true love to die. She never thought this would be a problem. But now, as her life becomes caught up in the strange and sinister world of the Raven Boys, she’s not so sure anymore.

I adore maggie's writing . I love how different this sounds plus the cover art does add something. I love ravens. It is so hard choosing want to buy w/ the limited chance for books. Hope  i get them soon

Review: Darker Still by Leanna Renee Hieber

Darker Still (Magic Most Foul #1)
by Leanna Renee Hieber
Published by Sourcebooks Fire
Date publication:  November 8th 2011
Source: gifted by  joyousreads.com
Rating: 4/5

Synopsis: I was obsessed.
It was as if he called to me, demanding I reach out and touch the brushstrokes of color swirled onto the canvas. It was the most exquisite portrait I'd ever seen--everything about Lord Denbury was unbelievable...utterly breathtaking and eerily lifelike.
There was a reason for that. Because despite what everyone said, Denbury never had committed suicide. He was alive. Trapped within his golden frame.
I've crossed over into his world within the painting, and I've seen what dreams haunt him. They haunt me too. He and I are inextricably linked--bound together to watch the darkness seeping through the gas-lit cobblestone streets of Manhattan. Unless I can free him soon, things will only get Darker Still.

My thoughts

Cover : It has a pretty girl in a dress cover. The cover shows what happens in this book and how she enters the painted portrait. A prison of someone she has come to love.

Book:
THIS JOURNAL IS THE SOLE PROPERTY OF:
MISS NATALIE STEWART
A GIFT TO MARK , HER EXIT FROM
THE CONNECTICUT ASYLUM

This story takes place in 1800 New York. Natalie is a young middle class lady. Mute but well educated and well spoken in her writing. The shock of her mother’s death caused her disability at the age of four. Through her father’s job at the metropolitan museum of art , Natalie comes in contact with a mesmerizing enchanting and cursed painting of Lord Denbury, a not so long ago English perished young man. ( Darker Still is influenced by the picture of Dorian gray but is not a copy cat and differs). She is his savior and help to break the hex. Natalie gradually falls in love or better said on him . ( ha ha book joke)Will Natalie succeed, will the evil forces, dark magic and demons prevail, will Dembury be freed? Read to find out !

Do you know the reading experience when immersing yourself in Dracula, Frankenstein or Jekyll and Hyde. Darker Still has a similar gritty gothic feel to it with splashes of austeny touches. I know I am giving high praise but the world building is that good. The dairy form it was written makes it stand out in the YA book crowd . It is written in 1800 eloquent fashion . Natalie could really have existed. So truly realistic and trough out the book I had to remind myself the experiences, the people are fictionalized. Ok maybe I’m exaggerating but the world building is really done well.

Characters

Natalie is a kind young lady. She comes up for herself though her writing and later on with something more she missed for a long time .S he is very brave in the midst of danger that’s induced by dark magic and demonic powers. She tries to save poor and homeless girls from slaughters.

Lord Denbury is a true gentleman. He is there for Nat and is protective over her but not overprotective and surely does not chain her up. He respects Natalie’s decision not like a well known and super popular *cough*pale *cough* sparkly fellow. He is a person who was on his way to serve mankind for the greater good before he got hexed. Now i know why bloggers use a specific term for him; DENBURYLYCIOUS description

There are lovely parents or parental figures present through this whole book. Her father is a smart kind man and her to be happy and well educated. We see Madame North more of the time. She is one the 1st real friends Natalie has and a awesome source for help in the quest of defeating evil.

I had a little problem with the ‘’other one’’, ‘’the other self, the villain . It is sexualized and pure evil. A demon. I know it is evil but still I hoped for its motivation. That was not fully explained. I know it is just book one but I hope more will be revealed plus explained.

Darker Still is not perfect but still really great. Thanks Joy @joyousreads for the gift. You are da bomb. After reading the synopsis of book two there is more danger upon them and explaining things to society will be frikkin hard. I can’t wait and I hope I will win cash soon to pre order or order it.

The Twisted Tragedy of Miss Natalie Stewart is out on November 1st. I MUST HAVE IT. Sighs. Are you looking for something new and fresh in Paranormal YA . This not another half-baked paranormal but they characters witness growth especially Natalie . I HOOOPE you give it a try

The Prey (The Hunt #2)
by Andrew Fukuda
Published by  St. Martin's Press
Date to be published : January 29th 2013

Synopsis: For Gene and the remaining humans—or hepers—death is just a heartbeat away. On the run and hunted by society, they must find a way to survive in The Vast... and avoid the hungry predators tracking them in the dark. But they’re not the only things following Gene. He’s haunted by the girl he left behind and his burgeoning feelings for Sissy, the human girl at his side.
When they discover a refuge of exiled humans living high in the mountains, Gene and his friends think they’re finally safe. Led by a group of intensely secretive elders, the civilisation begins to raise more questions than answers. A strict code of behaviour is the rule, harsh punishments are meted out, young men are nowhere to be found—and Gene begins to wonder if the world they’ve entered is just as evil as the one they left behind. As life at the refuge grows more perilous, he and Sissy only grow closer. In an increasingly violent world, all they have is each other... if they can only stay alive.
oooh. a cover change. Sad we will not see the 2nd go to match the previous cover but this one so much better and goes well with the orange. Plus i think i know who that is. I think.  I can't wait

Samurai Awakening [ GOODREADS]
by Benjamin Martin
Published by  Periplus Editions (HK) Ltd.
Date to be published : October 10th 2012

Synopis: David Matthews is having a rough time. Being a teenager is bad enough, but when he picks up and moves to Japan for a year, with barely any knowledge of the language or social behaviors of Japanese teenagers, things go from bad to worse.
Until one day, David attends a temple ceremony and finds himself possessed by a Japanese god.
Suddenly, he can understand and speak Japanese. He has unbelievable new powers, including the ability to shift into a tiger, and a powerful sword he can materialize at will from its sheath—his body. But nothing comes for free, and these changes bring David face-to-face with the most terrifying creatures of Japanese legend—vengeful okami, demonic oni and terrifying ghostly yurei.
Trained by his host family, famous sword-makers and the keepers of an ancient secret entrusted to their family by the first Emperor of Japan, David must fight desperately to save his host sister from a hoard of Japanese monsters. Evil has returned to Japan, and David must overcome his own insecurities if he is to save her and become a True Samurai—the protector of Japan.
The cover is decent but still intrigued. Requested it from netgalley. Finger crossed

Synopsis:16 year old Anna Rogan has a secret she's only shared with her best friend, Rei; she can astrally project out of her body, allowing her spirit to explore the world and the far reaches of the universe.
When there's a fatal accident and her classmate Taylor takes over Anna's body, what was an exhilarating distraction from her repressive home life threatens to become a permanent state. Faced with a future trapped in another dimension, Anna turns to Rei for help. Now the two of them must find a way to get Anna back into her body and stop Taylor from accusing an innocent friend of murder. Together Anna and Rei form a plan but it doesn't take into account the deeper feelings that are beginning to grow between them

My thoughts

Cover :shimmer ,shimmer, blue shimmer . A icy-cold blue waterfall with in front a floating girl. High on the 2012 coverloves

Book:Paranormal YA has seen a big boom.Throughout the short time span books have popped up like mushrooms.Ideas that were new got recycled and used again and again with a basic formula.Resulting in stale cookie cutter bad boy infested ( the good ones not included) young adult books. This one is different. I see you are rolling your eyes.""Yeah right, different."".This is my response ""Yes it is"". Reason: astral projection.Let it sink it.You know the ability to extract your being out of your physical body. This book has it.A particular girl can do it.Anna.

The way Auracle is written is lovely and flows of the tongue. After some chapters Anna's voice structured for me.This book is not PNR but rather PNR+. This includes friendship, loyalty, family struggles, taking care of your actions and fixing stuff and doing whats right even without a body.
All that make it real and relatable. It is paranormal infused with somewhat crime, baked not burned with romance (you know the romantic goodstuff) and sprinkled with contemporary fiction elements. I also liked the Asian/cultural influence.Japanese to be correct. Philosophy, mediating and Rei but more about him later( Ya'll would love to know about him)

One minor complaint: Why was is not longer.I finally befriended them, got close and caring for the peeps in this book.BAM.THE END.I know if it was longer it could have resulted in dragging parts.I'm still happy in the end that this story was written and 80 to 85 % satisfied.

Anna is the girl I've mentioned before. She's witty and a girly.Wears not a lot make up or none.Energetic. Takes action after her body is stolen after the accident ( see synopsis) Being out of her body and trying to rescue , let say more than 2 people. The best is that sees that shes a cause in this and takes action (what a lot of PNR YA girls don't )

Harper is the ''mean'' girl. She popular, gets whats she wants and she did and caused the bigger .You are suppose to dislike but feel sorry for her. BRIGHT . silent moment ( huh?)

Rei.He's the boy next door. He's half Japanese (Whoot whoot, he is the 2nd love interest of color that i know of in 2012 paranormal releases). Some would say he is too perfect and some already said that. But he has flaws. He carries his loved one problems and sorrows on his soldier and is pretty hard on himself. I love how Anna shows him he does not need to.Hope you'll meet him soon. Ladies come closer. Closer. CLOSER. You will swoon.Hotness

The romance was lovely. Not insta lovey. But a gradual one.Anna 's situation brought them closer strengthens their relationship and eventually bloomed into love.

The plot was not difficult but trough Miss Rosati's writing made it tense, lovely and explosive trip.Plus the ability is explained very well. Very fictionally scientific. Sad to see this group of go but i ca't wait to read more by her. This lovely gem is out tomorrow.
