Iron Hearted Violet (GOODREADS)
by Kelly Barnhil
Published by Little, Brown Books for Young Readers
Date to be published: October 2012
Synopis:The end of their world begins with a story. This one.
In most fairy tales, princesses are beautiful, dragons are terrifying, and stories are harmless. This isn't most fairy tales.
Princess Violet is plain, reckless, and quite possibly too clever for her own good. Particularly when it comes to telling stories. One day she and her best friend, Demetrius, stumble upon a hidden room and find a peculiar book. A forbidden book. It tells a story of an evil being -- called the Nybbas -- imprisoned in their world. The story cannot be true -- not really. But then the whispers start. Violet and Demetrius, along with an ancient, scarred dragon, may hold the key to the Nybbas's triumph . . . or its demise. It all depends on how they tell the story. After all, stories make their own rules.
Iron Hearted Violet is a story of a princess unlike any other. It is a story of the last dragon in existence, deathly afraid of its own reflection. Above all, it is a story about the power of stories, our belief in them, and how one enchanted tale changed the course of an entire kingdom
She freaking rides on a dragon. that is badass .And so young. I love middle grade covers
Tides (GOODREADS)
by Betsy Cornwell
Published by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt
Date to be published: June 4th 2013
Synopsis:When high-school senior Noah Gallagher and his adopted teenage sister, Lo, go to live with their grandmother in her island cottage for the summer, they don’t expect much in the way of adventure. Noah has landed a marine biology internship, and Lo wants to draw and paint, perhaps even to vanquish her struggles with bulimia. But then things take a dramatic turn for them both when Noah mistakenly tries to save a mysterious girl from drowning. This dreamlike, suspenseful story—deftly told from multiple points of view—dives deeply into selkie folklore while examining the fluid nature of love and family

Chantress (GOODREADS)
by Amy Butler Greenfield
Published by Margaret K. McElderry Books
Date to be published: May 7th 2013
Synopsis: Sing and the darkness will find you.
Shipwrecked on an island seven years ago, Lucy has been warned she must never sing, or disaster will strike. But on All Hallows Eve, Lucy hears tantalizing music in the air. When she sings it, she unlocks a terrible secret: She is a Chantress, a spell-singer, brought to the island not by shipwreck but by a desperate enchantment gone wrong.
Her song lands her back in England — and in mortal peril, for the kingdom lies in the cruel grasp of a powerful Lord Protector and his mind-reading hunters, the Shadowgrims. The Protector has killed all Chantresses, for they alone can destroy the Shadowgrims. Only Lucy has survived.
In terrible danger, Lucy takes shelter with Nat, a spy who turns her heart upside-down. Nat has been working with his fellow scholars of the Invisible College to overthrow the Lord Protector, and they have long hoped to find a living Chantress to help them. But Lucy is completely untrained, and Nat deeply distrusts her magic. If Lucy cannot master the songspells, how long can she even stay alive?
Beguiling and lyrical, dangerous and romantic, Chantress will capture readers in a spell they won’t want to break

I chose Iron Hearted Violet for my WOW a couple of weeks back. I hope the illustrations for the book are as good or are similar to the one on the cover!
ReplyDeleteTides also sounds good, I've always been interested in selkie folklore!
With Chantress, I absolutely love fantasy but the Lord Protector and Shadowgrims sounds like it can get too cliche, no personality, mu ha ha type of villains (could be wrong though).
Nice pick! :)
I think out of all three I am most drawn to Chantress, but Iron Hearted Violet looks interesting too. I usually don't read that much middle grade, but that one looks good. Thanks for stopping by my WoW! Following you!
